You may harbor a stone in your kidney for years without being aware of it. Only when the stone attempts to move down the ureter -- the tube connecting the kidney with the bladder-- would you be aware of a pain in your back, at waist level, as if you have pulled a muscle.

As the stone makes it way down the ureter, the pain will move from your back to your front and, eventually down to your groin. It only ends when the stone finally drops out of the ureter and into your bladder. At this point, you might experience pain or burning when you urinate.

The pain can be over in minutes – or last for days. The worst case is if the stone blocks the ureter, sealing it off.
